No commitment.
Just a conversation.

01

Explore Sum Zero Wealth

A 30-minute conversation to understand what brought you here, walk you through how we work, and decide together if it makes sense to move forward. By the end, you’ll have a framework to evaluate any advisor you’re considering — not just us.

02

Discovery

Part quantitative, part qualitative.

We dislike 20-page data gathering questionnaires as much as you do, so all we ask is that you come prepared to have a natural conversation about your family and finances.

We’ll build your Current Position, a one-page artifact of your financial life as it stands today. From there, we’ll work through five planning modules over the following four to six weeks.

03

Retirement and Cash Flow

What does your life cost, now and in the future?

We define every goal that carries a price tag, whether that’s retirement income, your children’s tuition, or a place in the Hamptons. We build a cash flow projection, stress test it, and optimize income decisions around Social Security, pensions, and annuities.

Finally, we determine exactly where your next dollar should go, whether that’s deferred comp, Roth in-plan conversions, 529s, or taxable brokerage.

04

Investment Strategy

Your plan doesn’t live in a spreadsheet.

We build your portfolio based on the timing of your cash flows. We manage all of your accounts — taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-free — as one unified portfolio, with taxes optimized at every step.

Our approach is evidence-based, built primarily with ETFs and individual securities. Your assets are held at Charles Schwab, with full access to their tools and client service team.

05

Tax Planning

This is tax advice.

Taxes are likely the greatest expense over your lifetime, and they touch every financial decision you face. We believe in paying your fair share, just not leaving a tip.

We review your current tax return, build a multi-year tax projection, and identify opportunities around Roth conversions, charitable giving, and deferred compensation elections.

For clients who want everything under one roof, tax preparation will be available through our affiliate, Sum Zero Tax (availability planned for 2027), for a separate flat fee.

06

Estate and Protection

What happens if you get hit by a bus?

We make sure you have a good answer. If you last updated your estate plan when your kids were born, and those kids now have children of their own, it’s time for a refresh.

If you don’t have an attorney, we can refer you to one of ours. We come to attorney meetings, help translate between the financial and legal sides, and make sure nothing falls through the cracks on implementation — retitling accounts, updating beneficiaries, and executing gifting strategies.

Protection also means reviewing coverage across life, umbrella, disability, and long-term care.

07

Protect Your Digital Footprint

Your kids will thank you.

Most of what we help you build exists digitally. If you’re incapacitated or die, it’s imperative your family can easily access documents. We maintain secure digital storage for your important documents: estate plans, insurance policies, tax returns, home titles, and anything else you want us to hold.

We’ll help you set up a password manager, so your digital life isn’t held together by memory or the yellow sticky note on your computer monitor.

We also establish a personal code phrase with every client, never shared digitally, that we use to verify identity if we’re ever concerned about voice fraud or impersonation.

08

Ongoing Relationship

We meet twice a year. Here’s what we cover.

Spring
  • Financial review and life update
  • Tax return filed, estimated taxes calculated for upcoming vests
  • Bonus and vest proceeds invested
  • Cash flow and investment strategy updated
  • Insurance and beneficiaries confirmed
  • Family documents and password manager reviewed
Fall
  • Year-end tax position assessed, with enough time to act
  • Equity comp calendar mapped: upcoming vests, option expirations, blackout windows
  • Roth conversions executed
  • Deferred comp enrollment and 401k contributions set for next year
  • Open enrollment and benefits reviewed
  • Year-end charitable giving

Every meeting produces an updated one-page plan. For the analysts out there, we can produce the familiar 100-page report as well. We just find that one page gets a lot more use.

The most important financial decisions rarely follow a schedule. Outside our scheduled meetings, we want to be your first call for any decision that comes with a dollar sign.

If this resonates, let's talk.
